Moin moin,
This week: The rise of solar energy in the US, how renewable energy will create more jobs than Oil and Gas, Urea-based fuel cells? The more solar and wind capacity the less water consumption and TEDx SusMafia: 100 Climate Unicorns.
CHART OF THE WEEK - ☀ US Solar market insight
Improvement in solar PV manufacturing and efficiency have led to the decrease in price.
👷♂️👷♀️💸 Money For Green Energy Creates More Jobs Than Fossil Fuel Investment, New Study Finds
For every million dollars the United States government invests, solar produces over 2.7 times more jobs than fossil fuels, according to an analysis from two environmental think tanks and a labor union. Wind energy spurs over 2.8 times more jobs than investments in oil, gas and coal. And retrofitting buildings to be more energy efficient creates demand for nearly three times as many jobs.
The paper ― which the World Resources Institute, New Climate Economy, and the International Trade Union Confederation published Monday ― reviewed a dozen studies from 2009 to 2020 and compared the projected job numbers in Brazil, China, Indonesia, Germany, South Africa, South Korea, the United States and globally.
⛽⛽ Korea Maritime and Ocean University explore new catalysts for urea-based fuel cells
Fuel cells that generate clean electricity by breaking down urea - a common organic molecule - could become a great resource to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. However, state-of-the-art catalysts for these cells require precious metals, making them prohibitively expensive for mass production. To tackle this issue, scientists explored a novel family of nanostructured catalysts made from inexpensive nickel-based compounds, paving the way for the commercialisation of accessible urea-based fuel cells.
🦄🦄🦄 TEDx SusMafia: 100 Climate Unicorns
Doubling-down on last year's massively successful TEDxSusMafia 1.0, The Sustainability Mafia is curating a full-day TEDx experience in support of the Countdown initiative : a global effort to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis, turning ideas into action!
The goal: ClimateTech will be the next big wealth creator for society, and this theme is our rallying call-to-action for 'conscious capitalism'. We can and should create massive societal wealth through 100 1Billion$+ climate companies, while enabling a safer, cleaner, fairer and better Future for all by 2030
MAP OF THE WEEK - 🗺 Managing water and climate risk with renewable energy
Companies’ purchases of electricity from the grid affect local water quality and availability because the fossil-fuel and nuclear power plants that generate most of the world’s electricity withdraw considerable fresh water to support their operations. Some power plants discharge some or all of that water back into the local basin, which lessens their impact on water availability. The water that is not discharged is said to be consumed, and water consumption reduces the quantity available locally. Our analysis focuses on water consumption because it tends to increase water stress. By contrast, wind farms and solar arrays consume little to no fresh water; at most, water is used to clean solar panels.
